What is a CNA?
CNA stands for Certified Nursing Assistant, Nurse Aide or Nurse’s Assistant. A CNA is a trained professional who serves as an assistant to Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) and Registered Nurses (RNs).
A CNA assists LPNs and RNs with the basic care of patients. A CNA has direct and daily contact with patients and helps them with their daily activities. CNAs keep the nurses informed as to a patient’s behavior and condition.
Where do CNAs work?
CNAs may work in a variety of settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, and other facilities that offer long-term care. Duties and responsibilities may vary slightly among the different settings.
As a CNA, you can choose to work in many different work environments. Many CNAs opt to work in nursing homes, adult day care centers and patient’s homes, but the opportunities do not end there. CNAs also may choose to work in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, assisted living centers and mental health facilities as well. Additionally, CNA work schedules are typically flexible, enabling CNAs to work full or part-time, days, nights or weekends as desired.
What are advancement opportunities?
Many CNAs go on to become LPNs or RNs! It is entirely up to you and having the CNA certification certainly can help with getting accepted into nursing school. Your experience as a CNA will be invaluable in helping you decide if continuing your career as an LPN or RN is the right choice for you.
